Buddy Review (2026): Worth Streaming on CocoFlix?

Stepping into the Unicorn's Twisted Wonderland

“Buddy” begins with a striking and immediate subversion of audience expectations and it makes me think Casper Kelly was having a lot of fun throughout the movie. Kelly has a very unique style of comedy laced with a little darkness. Kelly’s brand of comedy and the strong sense of little delightful darkness really goes well with the anachronistic charm. In the movie, a little comic book shopping back in time unleashes a singing and magically bright orange unicorn. This singing and magically bright orange unicorn is the comic book shopping back in time's worst nightmare, trapping the comic book shopping back in time within a candy-coated, vintage and saccharine television show realm. Buddy's nature is chaotic and begin fun, but any perceived fun that Buddy begins becomes a rapid descent into madness. This movie is not any typical run of the mill horror/comedy. It is a meticulous construction of a psychological playground where the adorable and abhorrent become blurred together to the point of discomfort. It is a horror-comedy with a strong commitment to detail and a certain level of horror/comedy that goes beyond the norms. “Buddy” is unlike everything I have seen out there and demands a certain level of surrealism and horror/comedy spirit to truly let the movie sink in. The horror/comedy is rated R because of the commitment to a grotesque vision. There is this a lot of this in “Buddy” along with a very grotesque dark and twisted vision.

Performances Under Puppet Duress

In a film with a maniacal puppet as the main character, the actors have to fight to stay grounded with realistic reactions, which get more difficult and ludicrous as the characters suffer more and more unrealistically. One of Buddy's fellow actors, Cristin Milioti, is especially effective in bearing the weight of the emotional reality of the situations. The staff is trapped with a sadistic host, and the genuine dislike/lack of chemistry is real, and isolates the performers, with an anxious tension that helps to create a sense of anxious worrying for the performers as Buddy makes his increasingly insane demands. The performers involved in such an odd situation are to be commended, because as the story drifts into more absurd depth, there is an excellent counterpoint for the human element.

It stands out against regular films. It will be a great addition to your home theater for a close encounter of the 3rd kind with its entertainment and weirdness.
