A Cold War Comedy of Errors in Paradise
Martin McDonagh is known for his successful combination of dark comedy, grotesque violence, and potent verbal interchanges. The result is an exceptionally entertaining film. This time he gives us Wild Horse Nine, a crime thriller comedy, set on the Easter Island of 1973 in the build up to the Chilean coup. He gives us CIA agents Chris and Lee, and places them in what quickly becomes moral quicksand. McDonagh creates an immediate compelling situation in Wild Horse Nine. The film is the result of a long-standing friendship, and partnership, between McDonagh and his cinematographer, tragen miler. The friends have been collaborating on movie projects since they first worked together as two low-budget filmmakers in 1995. We are drawn into the world of Easter Island and immediately discover that much of what appears benign and mundane is really a cover for deception and undercurrents of real danger. As with most McDonagh films, Easter Island too has a sense of confinement, and the slow build up to the characters' psychological unraveling. McDonagh uses the island's otherworldly, eerie beauty to illustrate the moral and ethical dilemmas the CIA agents face.
The Gravity of Performance and Craft
One of the greatest strengths of ‘Wild Horse Nine’ is undoubtedly its all-star cast and McDonagh’s direction. The 3 principal actors of the film, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi and John Malkovich all deliver performances that elevate the material and allow the film to transcend the genre of quirky crime caper. Malkovich’s performance especially has been praised by critics for his portrayal of a character overwhelmed by a weariness of the world that has led him to take on a more cynical and wary outlook on the world. His performance is a masterclass in subtlety and acting and gives audiences a blank slate on which they can project their own assumptions and give a performance that is layered. Rockwell, who is also known for his range, compliments Malkovich’s performance extremely well, and creates the two-person dynamic that is a staple of McDonagh’s work. The dialogue in ‘Wild Horse Nine’ is filled with McDonagh’s dark wit and humor, and allows Buscemi’s character to develop alongside the 2 other leading males. The screenplay received a great deal of praise for its “stuttering, jabbing, weaving rhythm,” which ensured the dialogue was not merely functionally, and allowed McDonagh’s writing to shine in a way that supported but diverged from the plot. The visual storytelling in ‘Wild Horse Nine’ is a large improvement from McDonagh’s previous films, and allows audiences to appreciate the slow, moody and desolate beauty of Easter Island and McDonagh’s marriage of filmmaking with nature.
Landing for the Streaming Audience
For the CocoFlix consumer conditioned to constant, immediate gratification of satisfying their entertainment needs, Wild Horse Nine is a dramatic tour de force of filmmaking that is sure to satisfy and reward a patron’s intellectual engagement. Having an almost two-hour running time, and earning an R rating, this film cements itself as being distinguished from the rest as something that warrants and rewards a patron’s full attention. Compared to McDonagh’s other films, this film is noted for its swift and rapid tonal shifts from outrageous, over the top humor, to scenes of emotional, and often unsettling and bizarre horror. Based on McDonagh’s previous work, the audience is in agreement that he excels in his ability to elicit strong emotional responses from viewers, and his humor and ability to contrast dark with light, plays a big role in achieving that end. The audience feedback, as well as the 8.9/10 audience rating, speak for the wider resonance of this film. Parts of this film deal heavily with morally ambiguous characters and dramatic, thought provoking themes, creating a film that is far more than your average straight to streaming thriller. It is hopefully a sign of better things to come, and a step away from the conventional, for streaming audiences.
A Perilous Paradise Worth the Trip
'Wild Horse Nine' embodies the spirit of a classic Martin McDonagh piece. Each of his films feature distinctive styles and embody smart and witty writing. As always, he provides us with characters who live on the murky edge of moral ambiguity. 'Wild Horse Nine' seemingly effortlessly blend dark comedy with genuine sadness. Although it has not quite achieved the same level of acclaim as some of Martin McDonagh's other works, many critics agree that the film is a step in the right direction, reflecting positively on the minor stumbles that the film takes. McDonagh shows, yet again, his strength in bringing together a cast of talented actors. In particular, Malkovich, Rockwell, and Buscemi really bring themselves to their characters and absolutely steal the show. 'Wild Horse Nine' brings audiences a good look into man's darker side, and illuminates political hypocrisy and the will to survive, all while keeping an ironic outlook on the world. The biggest strength of the film may in fact be how well it ends. It gives audiences the opportunity for a rewarding binge. This is yet another win for Martin McDonagh and the movie industry as a whole.
