The Ozarks' Unseen Predator: A Gimmick That Glues

“Don’t Move” starts with a church group retreat in the beautiful yet threatening Ozark wilderness. Things quickly turn chaotic as the group finds itself in a life and death situation. The first 15-20 minutes of the movie sets up the story and focuses on a bi-pedal predator. The movie is directed by Maclain Nelson who takes the audience and the unsuspecting church group directly into the deep end. The group is quick to suspect Ricky, one of the group’s members who has a bad rep, but their real threat is an eight legged arachnid. The wilderness becomes a character in the movie, and along with the rest of the cast, helps to quickly set up the position of the group members. Like in the movie The Shining, the natural surroundings begin to work against the group. Mother Nature is first a servant, and then a predator. The film uses its surroundings to take an already high level of suspense and anticipation to a whole new level. The natural surroundings perfectly set the movie up to use nature against its characters. The combination of the predator and the environment creates a dystopian world, which is the true focus of the film.

Crafting the Crawling Dread: Execution Over Originality

While the average creature feature has a central mechanic or device, the true test of a horror film is its execution. "Don't Move" executes its "no movement" mechanic exceedingly well. Audience feedback states the "real threat is obvious early on, but still gets good reveals and ramping tension." While this mechanic could allow for mystery in a film, "Don't Move" isn't a film built for mystery. The strength of the film is in its relentless, overwhelming, and intense suspense. Each and every tiny involuntary twitch becomes agonizing to the audience as they become ridden with anxiety about when the prehistoric spider is going to strike. While a film could justify an arachnid antagonist as a mystery or a threat in the fabric of the story, "Don't Move" justifies the spider as a relentless driving force of nature. The driving force of the film is actually human. "Seemingly logical decisions" by the film's protagonists ground "Don't Move" in some semblance of reality and further suspend audience disbelief as they are put through a harrowing experience with a spider that seems to have the same instinct as the driving antagonist.

Performances and Stream-Worthy Sustenance

The main cast, Lyndsy Fonseca, Russ, and Tom Cavanagh, succeeds in bringing real-life personalities to high-level concepts in horror. While all of the actors help achieve this goal, the character of Megan, played by Lyndsy Fonseca, leads the film, and audiences appreciate this, as she helps explain the logic of Megan being able to lead, take charge, and survive throughout the story. The audience appreciation of Megan’s ability to be strong and resourceful makes her survival and leadership skills more plausible throughout the movie. With Tom Cavanagh, audiences appreciated his portrayal of Ned Flanders. Tom’s character also seemed to add a nice, subtle, and unpredictable “good” nature to the cast. Overall, the audience rating was in the middle, but the individual reactions showed that the audience had a lot of fun with the movie. Don’t Move is just a little over 90 minutes long, which makes it perfect for an evening watch on the CocoFlix streaming service. It doesn’t waste time and keeps viewers on the edge of their seat with a good, ominous presence throughout the movie. Overall, it’s good, horror-comedy, thriller time waster.

The Bottom Line for Binge-Watchers

"Don’t Move" is a low-budget horror film that unexpectedly creates high levels of tension and accomplishes more than what’s expected of it, thanks to a creative central conceit. The film should be applauded for what it sets out to do. It doesn’t get bogged down with existential examination of the genre. Rather, it proves that there are ways to create genuine cinematic tension with only one command, which happens to be the film’s title. As the characters make logical choices within the absurd parameters of the situation, the audience, of course, becomes invested in their fight for survival. While the film largely adheres to horror conventions, it keeps viewers on edge thanks to memorable and well-orchestrated scenes. It’s a thoughtful application of concentrated genre filmmaking. Because the antagonist is rather easy to decipher, it’s a credit to the filmmakers that it retains a decent level of suspense. If you’re a fan of horror films in the vein of “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” “Don’t Move” can be an enjoyable watch on CocoFlix, though it won’t change the genre. The film certainly upholds the concept of bingeable cinematic thrillers, and you’re likely to hold your breath the entire time.
