CocoFlix critic verdict
This ambitious reboot of a seafaring classic sails into complex waters, offering a potentially grand adventure that might struggle to reconcile its 'TV-PG' rating with a synopsis promising mutiny and betrayal.

Charting a Familiar Course into Uncharted Waters
Robert Murphy’s 2026 version of Treasure Island intends to re-capture the heart of this timeless tale for audiences accustomed to streaming. Starting strong with Jim Hawkins and his mother Bess stumbling upon the treasure map, the summary immediately elevates expectations with the promise of “mutiny, violence and betrayal” leading Jim on a journey to become “forever changed.” The summary is chock-full with great drama and builds a solid foundation for what could be an excellent coming-of-age adventure series. If the thriving violence and pirate shenanigans are toned-down to adhere to the “TV-PG” rating, how will this drama be provided? How will this be resolved to make an audience, albeit young, satisfied? This is the inherent dilemma presented in all adaptation of Treasure Island. The series focuses on striking a balance between maintaining the dramatic violence of the book while pleasing audiences of all ages. For the adaptation in question, it seems as though the series wants to address both sides of the spectrum. Overall, the trailer shows great promise and we at CocoFlix look forward to watching the series.
Navigating the Ensemble: Performances and Craft
Judging just by the casting choices, this looks to be a quality production. Tom Sweet as Jim Hawkins will surely transform before our eyes as he has to go from a curious, innocent boy to a hardened and toughened survivor of the pirate world. Each of his actions and reactions will reveal the growing disillusionment within Jim, and will most certainly require the same from the actor playing him. Surrounding Sweet, and possibly supporting him, are David Oyelowo and Hayley Atwell, whose inclusions in any project indicates a raised level of class. While no other info has been released about either Oyelowo or Atwell’s characters, we can easy place Oyelowo in the role of Silver, or possibly Hawkins (but we hope not), or even Black Dog. Atwell could certainly bring the strength and sensitivity required to play Jim’s Mother, as she also faces the dangers that the pirate world provides, as well as the emotional turmoil of losing her home. Jim is a growing boy, and the Oyelowo/Atwell combo could give the emotional range required to give justice to Jim’s transformation. With so much emotional rage, combined with quality performances, there is a lot that the production team can do to bolster the emotional and visual impacts of the film. The budget looks to be substantial enough to provide some scope to the production. The Atlantic, and the 18th century maritime world, could be captured with detailed production design, and surrounded with some soaring music. The atmospheric and visual elements could help to bolster the emotional depth needed for Jim’s character arc.
Is There Gold in These Streams?
For a streaming service like CocoFlix, Treasure Island has to do more than just produce a decent adaptation. Each episode should be of the length and quality to encourage binge watching. Jim’s change being alluded to in the series description as something that will alter Jim and make him “forever changed” suggests an arc that could potentially be engrossing for the duration of multiple episodes. Each episode should include enough plot points to keep the audience on the edge of their seat until the next episode is released. The ‘TV-PG’ rating should give the series some boundaries, and possibly complicate matters, especially with the main point of conflict in the series described as being a mutiny. Will there be blood? Will there be a softening of betrayal and taking away of menace? A family show isn’t synonymous with a show where the dramatic tension and seriousness should be taken away, and a show should avoid appearing as though it has had its drama and tension completely taken away. JM Barrie is reported to have said that he didn’t think you needed to resort to graphic violence to show that something is actually really horrible, and perhaps Adrian Murphy should take a lead from this and show how things can be done differently, without taking a show in the completely wrong direction.
Weighing Anchor: A Bottom-Line Call
Treasure Island attempts to tell a familiar story in a new and exciting way. While all the right building blocks seem to be in place: a talented cast; a timeless plot; and the drama of a classic treasure hunt, the real question mark hangs over the show’s ability to reconcile the demands of its gritty synopsis with a TV-PG rating. If the creative team behind the show, including director Robert Murphy, are able to find a way to include peril and make an emotional impact all within the bounds of the TV-PG rating, it most certainly will be worth the watch. The show has the potential to be an epic, adventure tale, that spans vast and adventurous landscapes, that is ripe with poignant and engaging characters and an evocative coming of age story. Of course, this ultimately will all depend on how well the show's creators are able to reconcile a TV-PG rating with the synopsis of “mutiny, violence and betrayal.” If diluted too much, it will ultimately just be a less engaging yet still watchable journey. This is definitely worth checking out if you’re in the market for a new, and possibly better, version of an adventure story that you’ve seen a thousand times.
✓What works
- Compelling classic narrative ripe for modern interpretation.
- Strong ensemble cast featuring David Oyelowo and Hayley Atwell.
- Promises a rich, character-driven coming-of-age arc for young Jim Hawkins.
- High potential for grand visuals and adventurous set-pieces.
✕What falls short
- Potential for 'TV-PG' rating to dilute themes of violence and betrayal.
- Risk of playing it too safe, failing to distinguish itself from previous adaptations.
